Almost 300 freshmen registered for orientation on Thursday, August 18, 2016. And at 8:00 that morning, they arrived, anxious and ready to start their high school adventure. Parents stood by, a few feeling nostalgic, some a little concerned, and others excited to begin this journey. EWHS faculty, all in a sea of blue and gold, greeted students with smiles and handshakes, and the atmosphere quickly changed to one of comfort.
Once students checked in, getting their t-shirts and schedules, they went to the auditorium, where they watched the drumline, led by newcomer band director Mr. Newsome, and the dance team, directed by teacher Cathy Wills, perform. The cheerleaders, under Shannon Deese’s advisement, showed the incoming freshmen just how much spirit we have here at EWHS, and then Principal Stacey Alston welcomed the crowd.
Over the course of the day, students had a chance to visit a club/organization fair, learn a new Warrior Slide, and research college and career requirements. In true Warrior spirit, upperclassmen led the students through their stations, manned the club tables, and even taught them the dance alongside the faculty. Parents attended their own sessions, in hopes of learning just what they need to do to help their children succeed. At the end of the fair, with appetites abounding, faculty members served pizza and drinks to the hungry attendees and were available to answer any additional questions.
Mr. Alston remarked, “The day was truly a success. I am so proud of our staff.” Mrs. Katonia Ford, administrative intern, said, “We could not have served the 400 plus people on campus without our faculty members.”
