As high school comes to a close for the 2016 graduates, seniors continue to win scholarships and grants towards their secondary schooling. Senior Amarachi Achonu, also known as the Editor-in-Chief of this year’s yearbook, was one of three in the country to win a $10,000 grant from Jostens Yearbook Company. With the help of the yearbook adviser, Ms. Lori Anderson, she submitted a portfolio of all her marketing techniques used throughout the school year, and was awarded with doughnuts and selfies from the yearbook staff and their Jostens representatives. “My mom is probably going to react the same way as she did with my Duke scholarship,” laughed Achonu. “She’ll have a screaming burst, say something really quick, then scream again.” Even though Achonu didn’t think she would win, she was very proud of herself for her hard work and effort.
The surprise was completely unexpected to her, whereas the rest of the yearbook staff already knew. “I didn’t think I would actually win,” noted Achonu. Talk about closing the year (and her high school experience) on a good note!
